Mulch

Mulch is a protective covering placed around growing plants to prevent moisture evaporation, to protect roots from freezing, and to retard the growth of weeds. Michael Makowski, Inc. offers a wide variety of mulches. Better grade mulches are generally darker in color and have better moisture retention; however they will decompose faster.

In choosing the right mulch for you, it would be to your benefit to stop in and see for yourself the different mulches we offer. Our educated employees will be more than happy to suggest a mulch that will best suit your needs.

When Should You Mulch?

Mulch can be applied almost anytime throughout the year. Winter mulching is usually done for decorative purposes. When mulching during the winter, it is recommended to apply the mulch in about one inch thickness to prevent warming the soil. Spring mulching is done to prevent premature weed growth and is usually applied two to three inches in thickness. Spring mulching is also done for cosmetic reasons.

How Much Mulch Do You Need?

Mulch is purchased by the cubic yard. Follow these easy instructions to calculate how much mulch you need your project:

1. Measure the area that you are looking to cover. Multiply the Length (feet) and the Width (feet) to get the Area
2. Divide the Area by 27
3. Divide that answer by 12
4. Multiply that answer by the number of inches (depth of the material) desired
5. You now have the number of cubic yards required for your project

How much is one cubic yard? One cubic yard is equal to 27 cubic feet. One yard covers approximately:

100 square feet at 3 inches deep
150 square feet at 2 inches deep

If you have a wheelbarrow, the following may be helpful:

You need (7) 4 cubic feet wheelbarrows to equal 1 cubic yard.
You need (5 1/2) 5 cubic feet wheelbarrows to equal 1 cubic yard.
You need (4 1/2) 6 cubic feet wheelbarrows to equal 1 cubic yard.

If you are still unsure how much mulch is required for your needs, just give us a call.

How Do You Apply Mulch?

Mulching provides a neat appearance to your landscape while helping to reduce weed growth. You don't have to be "rocket scientist" to have a great looking yard. Here are a few important Do's and Don'ts when it comes to mulching:

DO re-mulch your trees, shrubs, and planting beds every 12 to 18 months.
DO periodically remove any mulch build-up.
DO apply mulch lightly...2 to 3 inches on new plantings; 1 to 2 inches when
re-mulching.
DO "turn and fluff up" mulch once a year to keep it fresh looking and to prevent caking. This step also prevents artillery fungus from forming.

DON'T apply mulches deeper than 3 to 4 inches...MORE IS NOT BETTER!
DON'T heap mulch around the trunks of trees. This will cause rot and insect damage.
DON'T forget to mulch!

If you are mulching over existing mulch, make sure to loosen or remove the existing mulch before you start. This alone will help to ensure better moisture penetration.
